Pakistan’s turbulent tour continues as England dominate Day 1 of Edgbaston Test

Birmingham [UK], September 10 (ANI): England seized control of the third and final Test against Pakistan at Edgbaston on the opening day, with the visitors’ on-field struggles mirroring the off-field turmoil as they were bowled out for 133 before the hosts recovered from an early wobble to reach 156/4 at stumps, taking a 23-run lead.

Already 2-0 up in the series after victories at Lord’s, England captain Joe Root opted to bowl first, and his decision was quickly proven right. The hosts’ pace attack exploited the movement on offer to dismantle a revamped Pakistan batting line-up in just 33.5 overs. playerbros.org

Pakistan entered the match amid controversy after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) released seven players, along with then head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul, following defeats in the first two Tests. They made four changes to their XI, handing Test debuts to three players in a bid to finish the series on a positive note. However, the revamped batting line-up struggled against England’s relentless seam attack.

Ollie Robinson provided the early breakthrough by dismissing Saim Ayub (0) and claimed his 100th Test wicket, while Jofra Archer got rid of Azan Awais (9) not much later. Robinson then dismissed Abdullah Shafique (3) in the ninth over as Pakistan found themselves 26-3.

Archer inflicted more misery as he dismissed Shan Masood (5) in the very next over to make Pakistan’s scoreline 29-4 in 10 overs. Babar Azam and Shakeel then formed a brief 22-run partnership, but Tongue removed Azam in the 15th over to reduce the visitors to half-a-side.

Tongue then dismissed Ghazi Ghori (4) and Mohammad Imran Randhawa (5) as Pakistan ended the first session at 100/7.

Robinson didn’t take much time as he scalped Razaullah (11) in the very first over of the post-lunch session.

Tongue then got rid of Pakistan’s highest scorer, Saud Shakeel (43), before Archer came back to dismiss Mohammad Abbas as Pakistan were skittled for 133.

Josh Tongue emerged as England’s standout bowler. Tongue finished with 4/42, while Jofra Archer returned 3/25 and Robinson claimed 3/15.

England’s reply also suffered an early setback. Pakistan’s bowlers found movement with the new ball and reduced the hosts to 39/3. Ben Duckett fell for 11, Jordan Cox was dismissed for four, and Razaullah produced a breakthrough by trapping Joe Root LBW for eight.

However, England regained control through Emilio Gay and Harry Brook. Gay settled into his innings and scored 60, providing stability at one end, while Brook counter-attacked effectively to put pressure back on the Pakistani bowlers. Both combined for a 104-run partnership before Razaullah dismissed Gay.

By the close, England had reached 156/4 from 39 overs, moving into a 23-run lead with six wickets still in hand. Harry Brook remained unbeaten on 52, while Dan Lawrence was unbeaten on five. (ANI)

Ishan Kishan Is Knocking Hard. But Is There Any Room in India’s Test XI?

Image: X

There is an old maxim that goes something along the lines of: ‘Good is not enough when better is expected, and better is not enough when you can become the best.’ Maybe, just maybe, when Ishan Kishan found himself in the wilderness, he ended up reciting this line every single day.

With impressive performances in domestic cricket and for India in T20Is, he barged through the T20 World Cup selection door. Some months later, with the selectors watching, Kishan finished with a memorable 270 in the Duleep Trophy final in Chennai. He followed that up with an 80 in the second innings.

With the sheer weight of runs behind him, Kishan would certainly have given the national selectors food for thought about his potential in the longest format. Of course, the sceptics would argue that Kishan compiled those runs on a placid surface. But more than the runs he accumulated, it was his zen-masterly concentration that stood out.

Be it just before a lunch or tea break, or when the opposition tried to induce a false shot with four fielders square and behind square on the on side, Kishan’s concentration did not waver one bit. His long vigil at the crease would have convinced the selectors, to some extent, that he is more than just a T20 cricketer.

On his part, Kishan observed that being the captain of the East Zone side had helped him build a strong foundation.

“When you are the captain of the team, the first thing [you develop] is situational awareness,” Kishan said after scoring 270 off 334 balls in the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone. “You have to stay alert the entire day on the field to understand what is happening and what isn’t. You have to take care of all your team-mates. There are so many small things we often overlook in our daily routines – you don’t look at your players or try to help them figure out how they can get better. But when you are the captain, it becomes your duty to help them.

“You will have to take responsibility. If you don’t take it now, when will you? It’s not like I am 22 years old and have just broken into the team. Going through this whole [leadership] process leads to immense personal growth, and while you might not realise it immediately, your mindset shifts completely, and you become much calmer about things.”

Having showered praise on Kishan, however, his chances of breaking open the Test-selection door immediately look remote. As a wicketkeeper-batter, he is up against Rishabh Pant, one of India’s finest Test cricketers, alongside Dhruv Jurel, who has also done well in the limited opportunities he has had in Test cricket.

Even if Kishan were to be considered as a pure batter, there is Sarfaraz Khan waiting in the wings. Tilak Varma himself has put together gritty performances in the ongoing Duleep Trophy.

Kishan, though, would have just one thought in his mind: accumulate as many runs as possible and leave it to the selectors to decide his fate in the longest format of the game.

Hardik Pandya Named in India A Squad for One-dayers Against Australia

The all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been included in the India A squad for the one-dayers against Australia A. However, he will be subject to fitness clearance.

The all-rounder was seen in action during IPL 2026 and has spent most of the time undergoing rehab at the BCCI‘s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

Hardik Pandya had missed part of the Mumbai Indians’ campaign with back spasms and suffered a leg strain while training at the CoE during the ODI series against Afghanistan.

Hardik hasn’t played ODIs since the Champions Trophy finals in 2025 and has been rested for the T20 World Cup in 2026.

He has been back in India’s limited-overs plans with an ODI World Cup in October-November 2027, but fitness issues kept him out of action.

India will be hoping for Hardik Pandya to clear his fitness tests ahead of the Australia A series and begin preparations to get back in rhythm. He is considered a key player in India’s World Cup plans.

He will be a suitable seam-bowling all-rounder in the South African conditions. The Australia A series will be played in Puducherry. The tour begins with two four-day tests, from September 29 to October 2, while the three one-dayers will be played on October 06, 09 and 11.

Devdut Padikkal will be captaining the side with Sai Sudharsan named as his deputy. With four-day games clashing with the Irani Cup and the Asia Games, the squad is missing several promising stars.

Seam bowler Anshul Kamboj, off-spinner Tanush Kotian and wicketkeeper N Jagadeesan are the only other members of the 15-member squad.

Meanwhile, several stars like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and Yash Thakur made their T20I debut during the tour of Zimbabwe in July.

Meanwhile, all-rounders Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar have received fitness clearances from their respective injuries. As Reddy missed the white-ball tours of Ireland and England with a quadriceps injury, Washington missed the two-match test series against Sri Lanka with a hamstring injury.

Both were picked for the T20I series against Afghanistan, which begins on September 13, subject to fitness clearance. The status of fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshit Rana, who were also picked pending fitness clearance, is not yet known.

Ancelotti names Brazil squad for India and Australia friendlies

Carlo Ancelotti has named his first Brazil squad since the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with a mix of established stars and younger players included as the Selecao begin preparations for the next cycle.
The squad will be available for Brazil’s upcoming international fixtures, including friendlies against Australia on September 25 and 29, before the five-time world champions travel to Kolkata to face India on October 3.
Ancelotti made it clear that youth will be a major focus of his plans. While several players from the World Cup squad remain, the Italian coach has opened the door to a new generation and stressed the importance of giving younger players opportunities at international level.
The goalkeeper department sees a clear shift towards youth, with Hugo Souza, Pedro Morisco and Otávio selected. Ancelotti said experienced goalkeeper Alisson remains in his plans, but the immediate priority is to assess younger options.
The squad also includes familiar names such as Vinicius Jr, Raphinha, Endrick, Gabriel Magalhães, Marquinhos and Bruno Guimarães. João Pedro, who missed Brazil’s World Cup squad, has also been called up after his impressive form for Chelsea.
Brazil squad
Goalkeepers: Hugo Souza, Pedro Morisco, Otávio.
Defenders: Arthur Dias, Douglas Santos, Gabriel Magalhães, Jair, Marquinhos, Matheuzinho, Mauro Jr, Vitor Reis, Wesley.
Midfielders: Andrey Santos, Breno Bidon, Bruno Guimarães, Danilo, Douglas Luiz, Gabriel Bontempo.
Forwards: Endrick, Estevao, João Pedro, Pedro, Raphinha, Rayan, Samuel Lino, Vinicius Jr.
The call-up also reflects Ancelotti’s wider plans to work closely with the younger national-team categories and identify players who could form part of Brazil’s squad for the 2030 World Cup and the next Copa América.
For Indian football, the biggest attraction remains October 3. Brazil’s arrival in Kolkata will mark the first meeting between the two senior national teams, with the spotlight now firmly on which of Ancelotti’s new-generation players will take the field against India.
