Proteas return a win for domestic cricket
Several Proteas are back representing their provincial teams as South Africa’s first-class season gets underway ahead of a busy international summer.
There is something refreshing about looking through the team sheets from the opening round of South Africa’s first-class season.
Temba Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton are back with the Lions. Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi and Simon Harmer are playing for the Titans, while Keshav Maharaj is captaining the Dolphins.
At Newlands, David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne are representing Western Province.
These are players South Africans are used to seeing in Proteas colours. This week, they are back playing first-class cricket for their provincial teams.
It is not unusual for Proteas to play domestic cricket when their schedules allow. What stands out about the opening round is how many are involved at the same time.

That is particularly refreshing in the modern game.
The cricket calendar is pulling players in more directions than ever. International commitments sit alongside a growing number of T20 and franchise competitions around the world, giving the best players plenty of options throughout the year.
There is nothing wrong with that. Franchise cricket is now a major part of the game and has created opportunities for players around the world.
But it also makes weeks like this good to see.
South Africa’s first-class competition has Proteas spread across several teams, and they are doing it at a useful time for the national side.
Jansen, Ngidi and Harmer form a strong Titans attack against the Dolphins at SuperSport Park, with Keegan Petersen also in the side.
On the other side is Maharaj, who brings more than 200 Test wickets to the Dolphins attack.
Bavuma and Rickelton are involved for the Lions against Boland at the Wanderers, while Bedingham and Verreynne are back in Western Province colours against the Warriors.

Kagiso Rabada could have been another.
The Proteas fast bowler would have played for the Lions in the opening round but is recovering from a right hamstring injury, which has also ruled him out of the upcoming ODI series against Australia.
Proteas coach Shukri Conrad had asked the nationally contracted players to feature in at least one of the opening two rounds of first-class cricket before the international season begins.
It is a sensible approach.
The Proteas have a demanding few months ahead, beginning with Australia.
After three ODIs later this month, South Africa host the Australians for three Tests in October. Bangladesh follow for two Tests in November before England arrive for another three across December and January.
That gives South Africa eight home Tests against three different opponents.
For the Proteas involved, first-class cricket offers competitive preparation before that run begins.
It is good for the domestic competition too.
Players pushing towards international level get to share dressing rooms with established Proteas and test themselves against some of the best cricketers in the country.

CSA has also increased the amount of first-class cricket available this season.
Division 1 teams will play 10 matches each, up from seven in recent seasons, with players and coaches welcoming the expanded schedule.
At a time when T20 and franchise cricket continue to occupy more of the calendar, that commitment to first-class cricket is worth welcoming.
The formats do not need to compete with each other, but South African cricket still needs a strong first-class competition if it wants to keep producing Test players.
Having current Proteas involved only strengthens it.
It might not happen in every round, and Proteas representing their provincial teams is nothing new.
But seeing so many of them back playing first-class cricket at the same time, while preparing for a major Test summer, is a welcome sight.
