NFL Allows Coach's Designee to Initiate Replay Challenges

The NFL has modified its replay challenge rules, allowing head coaches to designate a staff member to initiate challenges instead of only the head coach.

The NFL will allow its 32 head coaches to designate a member of their staff to initiate replay challenges this season, according to ESPN's Kevin Seifert. Previously, only head coaches could throw the red flag to challenge a play.

Teams will be required to inform officials of that designation before the start of each game. The change doesn't require votes from ownership and is reflected in Rule 15, Section 1, Article 1(a). Coaches challenged 151 plays in 2025, the highest total since 2019. catcross.org
