  • Alonso’s departure annoyed many Mets fans

Pete Alonso launched his 300th career homer Tuesday night, a tying shot in the ninth inning against his former team, and Coby Mayo’s inside-the-park homer in the 11th sent the Baltimore Orioles to a 7-5 victory at Citi Field.

“There’s a lot of history here with me,” Alonso said after receiving a beer shower from his Baltimore teammates. “It doesn’t matter where and when, I just want to help the team win. I’m just really, really happy for us to come back the way we did.”

Maresca says Manchester City still waiting for apology after incorrect 2023 derby goal

Enzo Maresca says Manchester United cannot complain about the controversial derby winner on Sunday because Manchester City are still awaiting an apology from the referees’ chief, Howard Webb, for a match-defining decision in the same fixture three years ago. City lost at Old Trafford in 2023 after Bruno Fernandes equalised despite Marcus Rashford being in an offside position.

Marseca was Pep Guardiola’s assistant at the time and had to witness Rashford’s winner minutes later. “The goal was not a regular goal, if you remember,” Maresca said. “And to be honest, no one apologised. We are still waiting for the apology for that goal. Sometimes it happens for you, sometimes it happens against you. It’s football.”

Joe Brady: No concerns about Highmark Stadium field for Thursday night

The condition of the playing field at the new Highmark Stadium became a talking point after the Bills played their first preseason game at the building this summer.

Some players aired concerns about the size and frequency of divots that came up during the course of play, which led the Bills to replace the field ahead of Thursday night's inaugural regular season game against the Lions. The Bills worked out at the stadium on Tuesday and head coach Joe Brady said that the team will not go into the game with reservations about the condition of the field.

“I really don't have many concerns with it,” Brady said, via Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News. “There wasn't a lot of concerns with it the first go around with it in terms of there was stuff that was moving. I credit our leadership that I understand that they want to have the best surface out there and be able to make the decision and kind of go with it. But, yeah there’ll be no concerns come Thursday. Our guys are excited just to be on grass.”

Linebacker Greg Rousseau agreed with Brady's closing statement and said he believes "it'll be smooth" based on Tuesday's experience. The Bills will be hoping that's the case so they can avoid the playing surface overshadowing anything about the game itself in the aftermath of the home opener.

Rooth Returns After Olympic Gold

Markus Rooth makes his competitive return at the Decastars event in France, his first competition since winning Olympic gold in Paris. The Norwegian athlete expects both good and bad performances as he eases back into competition.

According to communications advisor Lasse Gimnes, Rooth hopes to deliver in some events but doesn't believe he can yet perform a strong combined multi-competition. He's not going full speed in the pole vault, high jump, and long jump events yet. This event serves as a "vorspiel" (preliminary) to spring, with the ambition of getting started before more serious competitions.
