Saudi football clubs are preparing for a wave of legal claims from players after the Public Investment Fund reduced their budgets for the 2026-27 season, according to reports.

The reductions affect Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad, and Al Ahli, the four clubs brought under PIF control in 2023. The clubs face combined cuts estimated at between $200 million and $400 million.

Club boards have begun assembling legal teams ahead of possible disputes over unpaid or reduced salaries. Law firms in London and New York are also preparing to represent players.

The clubs are expected to prioritise payments to their highest-profile players, including Cristiano Ronaldo. Lower profile players, injured squad members, and those deemed surplus to requirements may face greater risks of delayed or incomplete payments.

The anticipated cases follow a wider reduction in Saudi football spending after the league attracted leading players with transfer fees and salaries that European clubs struggled to match.

Saudi Pro League clubs spent more than $1.5 billion following the start of the recruitment programme in 2023.

The league began introducing tighter financial controls in 2025. Oversight of club finances was transferred from the Sports Ministry to a Financial Oversight Committee within the Saudi Pro League.

The league has also changed the way recruitment funds are distributed for the 2026-27 season. Commercial performance and television audiences each account for 28% of allocations, sporting results account for 22%, and the remaining 22% is divided equally among clubs.

PIF has also begun reducing its direct ownership of football assets. In April of this year, it agreed to sell a 70% controlling stake in Al Hilal to Kingdom Holding Company, valuing the club at 1.4 billion Saudi riyals, or about $373 million.

Saudi clubs already face several financial disputes. FIFA’s registration-ban list included eight clubs from the country in May because of unpaid obligations to former players, coaches, or other creditors.

وقال النعيمي إن الأمير الوالد لم يكن ينظر إلى الحاضر فقط، بل كان يخطط للمستقبل بعقلية القائد الذي يؤمن بأن بناء الدول يبدأ بالإنسان، ولذلك جاءت قراراته ومشاريعه التنموية شاملة، فشهدت قطر نهضة غير مسبوقة في التعليم والصحة والاقتصاد والبنية التحتية والطاقة، حتى أصبحت نموذجاً تنموياً يحظى باحترام العالم.
إن تلك الرؤية الثاقبة أسست لدولة قوية بمؤسساتها، قادرة على مواجهة التحديات وصناعة الفرص، وهو ما انعكس على المكانة المرموقة التي وصلت إليها قطر إقليمياً ودولياً.

الرياضة مشروع وطني
وأوضح النعيمي أن الأمير الوالد آمن منذ وقت مبكر بأن الرياضة تمثل استثماراً وطنياً ورسالة حضارية، ولذلك منحها اهتماماً كبيراً، فشهدت الدولة طفرة هائلة في المنشآت الرياضية واستضافة البطولات الكبرى، حتى أصبحت قطر عاصمة للرياضة العالمية.
وأشار إلى أن النجاح في استضافة أكبر الأحداث الرياضية لم يكن وليد الصدفة، وإنما نتيجة تخطيط إستراتيجي طويل الأمد، أثبت للعالم قدرة قطر على تنظيم أضخم الفعاليات بأعلى المستويات، وهو ما عزز من سمعة الدولة وأثرها الدولي.

قائد قريب من شعبه
وأكد أن ما ميز الأمير الوالد، رحمه الله، لم يكن حجم الإنجازات فقط، وإنما إنسانيته وقربه من المواطنين وحرصه على تلبية احتياجاتهم، فكان يستمع للجميع ويؤمن بأن الإنسان هو أساس التنمية وغايتها.
وهذه العلاقة الصادقة بين القيادة والشعب صنعت محبة راسخة في القلوب، ولذلك لم يكن الحزن على رحيله مقتصراً على أبناء قطر، بل امتد إلى مختلف الشعوب العربية والإسلامية وكل من عرف مواقفه الوطنية والإنسانية.
وأشار النعيمي إلى أن النهضة التي تشهدها قطر اليوم هي امتداد طبيعي للأسس الراسخة التي وضعها الأمير الوالد، حيث يواصل حضرة صاحب السمو الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني قيادة مسيرة التنمية بثبات واقتدار، محافظاً على المكتسبات الوطنية، ومضيفاً إليها إنجازات جديدة عززت من مكانة الدولة في مختلف المجالات. وأكد أن استمرار النجاحات يعكس قوة الرؤية التي تأسست عليها الدولة، ويؤكد أن التخطيط السليم يصنع مستقبلاً مستداماً للأجيال القادمة.

Tokyo: Indian badminton star Pusarla Venkata Sindhu said Wednesday that "everybody is beatable" as she targets a medal at the world championships on home soil in New Delhi next month.

Sindhu won the world title in 2019 and also captured Olympic silver in Rio in 2016 and bronze in Tokyo five years later.

The 31-year-old is a massive star in her home country and will be the focus of attention at the world championships from August 17 to 23.

She told AFP in Tokyo, where she is playing at the Japan Open, that she expects to be in the mix for a medal.

"Right now, with the game I'm playing, I think I just need to do a little bit of small tweaks and stick to my game plan, irrespective of who the other player is," said the world number 10.

"Just keep fighting for every point. I feel that everybody is beatable."

Sindhu arrives in Tokyo after reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open last month.

Her last title came in December 2024 at the Syed Modi India International in Lucknow.

She believes playing at home will help her again at the world championships.

"There will be pressure, I will not deny that, but at the same time it's a kind of confidence when you play in your home court," she said.

"I think it's really good and I feel confident having it in our country."

Sindhu is not the only Indian player in contention for a medal next month.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are number four in the men's doubles world rankings, while Lakshya Sen is number 14 in men's singles.

"In India, I think after cricket, badminton is the next big sport," said Sindhu.

"In the last few years it's become a lot more, and we have a lot of athletes who are doing really well.

"It is quite popular and I feel that there will be a lot of crowds supporting India this time."

The last time the world championships were held in India was in 2009 in Hyderabad, Sindhu's home city.

She is hoping her country makes the most of the opportunity.

"For the youngsters, it will be a good thing to see top athletes who are coming to Delhi and playing at the top level," she said.

"It's a very good experience for the youngsters to see and learn a lot more."
