Pochettino to stay as USA coach until 2030 World Cup

Paris, France: Mauricio Pochettino has signed a contract extension to remain the head coach of the United States national team until the 2030 World Cup, US Soccer announced Monday.

The 54-year-old took over in 2024 and led the USA to the last 16 at the recent World Cup, which they co-hosted with Canada and Mexico. tbzikra.org

"It has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the men's national team program even stronger," said Argentinian Pochettino, whose coaching staff have also agreed new contracts.

"The passion we experienced from the fans throughout the World Cup only strengthened our belief in what is possible here...

"We want to try to have a lasting impact on the sport in the country that has welcomed us so warmly and for that impact to extend beyond results on the field."

The Americans won three matches at a World Cup for the first time before being knocked out by Belgium, following a huge controversy over FIFA's decision to suspended striker Folarin Balogun's ban for a red card.

Former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss Pochettino was named coach two years ago, after previous boss Gregg Berhalter left following a group-stage exit from the 2024 Copa America which the USA hosted.

Pochettino helped turn things around and led the team to the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup final, which they lost 2-1 to Mexico.

He had been linked with a return to European club football, but will instead stay with the US until the next World Cup, slated to be largely held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

"Mauricio has built a culture where players trust the group, trust the process and trust each other," said US Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone.

"We saw the impact of that belief in the way the team grew, competed and performed on the world's biggest stage."

The USA have not reached the quarter-finals of a men's World Cup since 2002, and hopes were high a partisan home crowd could carry them to at least that stage.

But after the Balogun affair, a fired-up Belgium quashed those hopes last month with a crushing 4-1 victory.

وأُقيمت المحاضرة في مقر النادي العربي الرياضي، وشهدت حضوراً تفاعلياً واهتماماً لافتاً من قِبل الشباب والمشاركين للتعرف على أحدث الطرق والأساليب الواعية في التعامل مع التكنولوجيا الحديثة. وقدم الأستاذ سمير محمد زيد الشميري، الباحث بالشبكة الإسلامية التابعة لموقع «إسلام ويب»، طرحاً عميقاً ومتميزاً حول الآثار المختلفة لاستخدام التكنولوجيا في حياة النشء والشباب، مستعرضاً الرؤية الشرعية والتربوية في التعامل مع نِعم العصر الحديث بالشكل الأمثل. كما سلطت المحاضرة الضوء على مجموعة من المحاور الجوهرية التي تهم الأسر والشباب على حد سواء، حيث استعرضت الأساليب السليمة والإيجابية لاستثمار الهواتف الذكية والأجهزة اللوحية لدى فئة المراهقين. وأكد المحاضر أهمية تحقيق «التوازن الرقمي» بين العالم الافتراضي والواقع المعيشي، معتبراً إياه «مفتاحاً أساسياً لصحة النفس والسلامة العامة». كما تضمنت المحاضرة بياناً شاملاً لأضرار الاستخدام المفرط وغير المنضبط للتقنية، وطرق وكيفية حماية الأبناء من الوقوع في فخ الإدمان الرقمي والتشتت الذهني، وسبل استغلال التقنية في طلب العلم وتطوير الذات.

London: Managerless Newcastle announced the signing of Czech goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Portuguese side Braga on Monday.

Hornicek has agreed a five-year deal after the Magpies activated his 30-million-euro (£25.7 million, $34.6 million) release clause, and he becomes the club's fifth signing of the summer.

"The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster from when I first heard about the move and now I'm so happy to be here," said the 24-year-old, who is expected to supplant Nick Pope as first-choice goalkeeper.

"I know Newcastle is a huge football city, with 52,000 fans at St James' Park creating an incredible atmosphere and pushing the team every game. I can't wait to play in front of them."

Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson said Hornicek had "firmly established himself as one of Europe's top young goalkeepers".

Eddie Howe left his position as Newcastle boss last week after five years at the club.

The Magpies struggled to a 12th-place finish in the Premier League last season and have endured a difficult summer transfer window.

Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali has moved to Tottenham and England forward Anthony Gordon has departed for Barcelona, while captain Bruno Guimaraes has been strongly linked with a move to Premier League champions Arsenal.

Newcastle start their Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool on August 23.

Prague: Aprilia rider Ai Ogura smashed his own track record to earn his maiden pole position for the Czech MotoGP in Brno on Saturday.

Japan's Ogura, a 25-year-old Trackhouse MotoGP Team rider, topped Friday's practices, improving the track record by over half a second in the Czech Republic's second city.

In Saturday's scorching heat, he shaved six tenths of a second off that time to claim the first MotoGP pole position of his career.

"The lap was very nice, to be honest I didn't expect that I go fast that much. Anyway it's good to have one fast lap, especially on a Saturday morning," said Ogura.

"We'll see this afternoon and tomorrow, it will be a long race so we'll see."

Italy's Fabio Di Giannantonio of Ducati-VR46 finished second more than two tenths of a second behind Ogura, with factory Ducati rider Francesco Bagnaia completing the front row.

Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi on a factory Aprilia finished fourth while reigning MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez took the fifth spot on the grid after completing a single lap in qualifying.

Bezzecchi tops the overall rankings with 180 points from eight of the season's 22 races, of which he has won four, ahead of Aprilia teammate Jorge Martin with 160.

Di Giannantonio is third with 138 points ahead of Pedro Acosta on a KTM with 132 and Marc Marquez with 108.

The Czech MotoGP continues with the sprint on Saturday afternoon before the main race on Sunday.
